BBQ Seasoning Mix

I make this seasoning mix in large quantities because it’s a really good all-purpose seasoning blend and it get used all year round.  Buying at your local bulk food store means a lot of money saved, and less packaging waste.  Store the mix in a reusable, airtight container.
Prep Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup smoked paprika
  • 1/2 cup sweet paprika
  • 1/2 cup kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup powdered mustard
  • 1/2 cup chilli powder
  • 1/2 cup cumin
  • 1/2 cup granulated garlic
  • 1/4 cup black pepper
  • 1/4 cup chipotle powder or cayenne

Preparation

  1. Add all ingredients into a large container with an airtight lid.  Put lid on tightly and shake well to mix. Store in a cool, dry place for up to one year.

Tips

  • You can easily double or halve this recipe, depending on how often you anticipate using it.
  • Spices start to lose flavour after about a year, but they do not go bad.  For peak freshness, the above quantities will last for several meals without losing their pungency,
  • If you like your barbecue really spicy, use both cayenne and chipotle.
  • There is a lot of smokiness with this mix because of the smoked paprika, cumin, and chipotle.  If you’re not a big fan of smoky flavour, substitute more sweet paprika for the smoked paprika, and use the cayenne instead of the chipotle.  Keep the cumin, though, because eliminating all the smokiness will result in a flat taste.
