Comfort Me, Food!

My week hasn’t gone the way I planned, as clearly evidenced by my Wednesday blog post ending up getting done on Friday night.  I had a lot of work to do, meetings scheduled, and meals to cook. And none of it got done according to plan, because I, your faithful blogger, am experiencing technical difficulties.  My hardware is not working right. I am not even writing the same blog post I had originally planned, but I will get back to it at a later date. All because I am stuck in bed. The worst part of having my schedule messed up was my son missing his chosen birthday dinner because of me. (Although if you check this week’s Meal Plan, you will see I am hopeful of a second, more successful attempt, on Thursday.)
Anyway, being temporarily bedridden has me feeling pretty sorry for myself and craving comfort food.  Which got me started thinking about comfort food and how we, as individuals, use it. My ultimate comfort food is cookies.  I’m like a dog that way. I achieved something? Woohoo! I deserve a cookie! I failed miserably? I deserve a cookie as a consolation.  I’m stuck in bed? Woe is me! Bring on the cookies! Cookies are not a pantry staple in our house, and generally I prefer to have cookies I have made myself, but store bought ones will do in a pinch.  One of the favourites in our house, dating back to when the kids were little, is the humble Arrowroot biscuit. Thin and crispy, with a mild vanilla flavour, it goes well with tea, coffee, hot chocolate, or a glass of milk.  And if you’re feeling feisty, you can smear some peanut butter, hazelnut spread, or even jam on there. Alternatively, French macarons make an extra special, indulgent treat. (Note to self: try making these some day.) I’m going to drop a Truth Bomb here, though: I hate Oreos. I may be alone on this one, but I’m sure there are other haters out there. Right?

Now, of course, I take my comfort in cookies in moderation.  Only two. At a time. But it has me wondering. What is your comfort food?  Do you like sweet or savory? Or salty? What about crunchy vs creamy? Is ice cream your thing? Or a burger and fries?  Please share your ultimate comfort food with us, and what about it soothes you. I’m looking forward to hearing what you have to say.

Hope you are feeling better Xanthe! My comfort food lately….sweet and salty popcorn by Smartfood. Not the easiest to find but tastes way better than the other brands. Depends on the weather and the day. I actually find salad with mandarine oranges, almonds, spinach, romaine, chicken and a nice balsamic vinegar a comfort food. Hmmm…think I ‘m going to go have some of that now 🙂 Take care.

That salad sounds delicious! I know there have been times, especially when travelling and eating out a lot, that a nice healthy salad has become the thing I craved too. And anything sweet and salty hits a couple of those comfort buttons at the same time.

I like chewy and moist cookies! Flavour doesn’t matter, as long as it’s soft!
In Hungary we didn’t have a lot of cookies…tea biscuits with filling were the norm and lots and lots of other baked goods.

  3. I LOVED arrow root cookies as a kid! For me, comfort food involves dark chocolate in something. But there are different kinds of comfort food. Sometimes if I’ve had an extra challenging day, I want breakfast for dinner! Or two oatmeal cookies, some decaf coffee and a good book! Feel better soon!
